Let Me Be Understood

Verse 1
D G D*
Well, mama's little martyr woke up with her face drawn on
D G D*
What you gonna do? Twenty-two, with your youth all gone
F# Em D*
And all your awful glory don't feel like it should
Em A D*
Before you hang me for my story, Lord, let me be understood

Verse 2
D G D*
Oh, 'cause it ain't about if, it's about when
D G D*
They put a weapon in my hand, now here I am, a heretic again
F# Em D*
But I feel sure-footed, hope I'm going somewhere good
Em A D*
No time to sit and wonder, Lord, let me be understood

Instrumental

Verse 3
D G D*
I used to walk around with shackles on my hands
D G D*
Back when I still needed you to tell me who I am
F# Em D*
We were standing at the dawn, unaware of the flood
Em A D*
Rain pours on and on, Lord, let us be understood

Verse 4
D G D*
Well, ain't you had enough, living in this picture show?
D G D*
Move a little closer, but, oh, don't let your demons show
F# Em D*
But I wouldn't go back even if I could
Em A D*
Howling at the drunken thunder, Lord, let me be understood

Instrumental

Verse 5
D G D*
Well, friend, I've been restless and I've been unwell
D G D*
But I have a heartbeat, and a trial to tell
F# Em D*
You can sentence me to burn, if you feel that you should
Em A D*
But let the clock hands turn and turn, let us be understood

Verse 6
D G D*
Call it revelation, call it in the air
D G D*
Boy, you can't reach salvation from your rocking chair
F# Em D*
You're gonna shed a tear, gonna have to give blood
Em A D*
No time to sit and wonder, Lord, let me be understood

Outro
D G D*
Here in the monumental yonder, let me be understood
